IACUC Application Help
IACUC Protocol: Submission Instructions
A. For New Studies:
- Download the Application for Approval to Vertebrate Animals in Research and Teaching.
- Also, download the Environmental Health & Safety 'Agent Registration Workbook'.
- Complete the documents as accurately as possible; if you need help, contact:

IACUC; Director: Dr. Ed Kennah; ekennah@pitt.edu (412-383-2014)
- Email the completed application to iacuc@pitt.edu.
Do not include the EHS Workbook in this email.
- Email the completed EHS Workbook to BioSafe@ehs.pitt.edu.
- Within five business days, you should receive an acknowledgment that the IACUC office has received your application.
If you do not receive this acknowledgment, contact the IACUC office at 412-383-2008.
- In approximately 2 weeks you will be emailed questions and concerns that the IACUC has about your Application, if necessary.
Likewise, the Environmental Health & Safety office will contact you about biosafety issues pertaining to your pending Application.
- Address any concerns that the IACUC or EH&S has as thoroughly as possible.
- In approximately 2 weeks after receiving your answers, you will receive either a letter of approval for your Application, or further communication from the IACUC Office.

B. Information For Public Health Service Grant Awardees:
No monies may be released by the University of Pittsburgh Office of Research for a Public Health Service grant award (new or competing renewal) involving animals unless the Office of Research has received prior notification of IACUC review and approval of those components of the respective grant proposal that relate to the care and use of animals.
